I don't understand people who think Rick is as unfeeling as he tries to claim he is. It has been shown several times that he does care about Morty. And he seems to care about Summer a decent amount too. Ricks tragedy is not that he is uncaring, but that he has convinced himself that he is.

That is a great point of the episode. Rick seems pretty shaken by how well Morty sees through his bullshit. He even, I think, believes that the final trap's answer is "Morty."
