That makes perfect sense. It just feels like a reach to unequivocally declare that Shinja and Kaworu were definitely in love in the original series.

Ah, well that might be the difference. I haven’t watched rebuild. By “films” I thought you meant Death & Rebirth and End of Evangelion. Rebuild is a separate continuity, so anything that happens there isn’t strictly correlated to the original series.
Utena is absolutely gay, but they never outright say it. That’s what I mean about gaybaiting. Japan has this bizarre hang up about not being explicit about homosexuality so they can have their cake and eat it too. It’s infuriating beyond belief.
If it isn’t romantic or physical, it isn’t gay, which is one of the main sticking points people have with this scene. When you get right down to it, anime has a long, storied history of gaybaiting. Look at Utena, Ryuunosuke in Urusei Yatsura, or Yukito in Cardcaptor Sakura. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if the scene…
Definitely agree that there are gay connotations to the scene, but I think you might be overstating just how strong Shinji’s own feelings are. He’s known this guy for what, a day? Maybe he’s attracted to him, maybe he’s confused by those feelings, but actual love?
Nothing seems to be capable of stopping this money train.
Yes!
Great job of summing up the appeal of speedrunning. It isn’t my cup of tea, but I can see why others would like it. Becoming a little concerned you might speedwrite your way into burnout, though!
Man, the final revelation of Sissel’s identity was such a gut punch. Thanks for bringing attention to this underappreciated classic!
Disagree on both counts, but they’re still worthwhile games in their own right.
Seeing as how you already covered Hotel Dusk, I’ll go with my second-favorite DS game, Ghost Trick. It’s positively criminal that this never received a sequel.
For real. I only finally managed to get an AES just last year. Thank god for flash carts, seeing as how the games cost more these days than the system did at launch!
Man, you’re really killing it with the retro write-ups lately. Keep up the good work!
It’s almost a shame that Neo Geo took off like it did, as it meant SNK would no longer experiment with stuff like this.
Love Hotel Dusk and greatly appreciate seeing someone spread the word about this magnificent game! Kind of confused by the first sentence of your article, though. “I still have a classic Nintendo 3DS that plays the old GBA games, but I only take it out when I go on airplanes.” As far as I know, no 3DS can play…
Twin Snakes was an affront against god. Increased resolution will only serve to drive that point home even harder.
Tim Allen is a goddamn nazi.
One would assume it’s the Steam port from a few years ago, just like VII and IX. But who knows...
How are there still people rushing to defend bigotry? It doesn’t matter if a cis hetero white person isn’t offended by something. When a minority person tells you it’s offensive, maybe listen instead of coming up with justifications?
