I think the US spends about 3-4% of its GDP on the DoD. Our commitment under NATO is a minimum of 2%. US military spending is above the minimum we are obligated to spend, but not to an excessive amount. That still leaves over 96% of our GDP available to spend on things like education and healthcare.
