This is not the way advertising works. Advertisers have limits and their own KPIs they need to reach. If millions of people cut cable and aren’t watching ESPN on TV, the amount of money they could demand is directly affected.

I don’t think you have the faintest idea whether they overpaid for the rights. I’m not saying I do, I’m saying that ESPN’s biggest customer (advertisers) have made it abundantly clear they will pay absolutely top dollar for ESPN’s product (you).

You know what might have actually helped in the long term? Cutting the executives, some of whom are surely making some pretty large salaries, who decided overpaying for TV rights was a good idea.
