Nobody’s hurt when a white person cosplays a Black character until they paint their face. It’s okay to be a white CJ from San Andreas or a Black Dante from DMC, your skin tone has nothing to do with your character. 

Not quite. You can cosplay a character of a different race, as long as you don't cosplay the race itself. 

It doesn’t matter what you’re trying to do, what matters is what you’re actually doing and how people feel about it. If what you're doing is disrespectful to an entire race and disregards a well known and troubling historical practice, fuck your intentions.
