They were road legal prototypes with virtually no resemblance to the road cars they were claimed to be based on. It's worth noting that the FIA put an end to them when they started to get faster than LMP cars.

In my hometown of Cleveland, Ohio, it is illegal to drive while sitting on someone's lap, which is a real buzzkill.
