Since you seem inclined to bring economic status into a discussion about powertrain configurations (wow we’re all impressed you have an E92 M3 track car and can preach to us little kid peons about the glorious ways of RWD) I’ll go there too.

FWD is easy to drive under most conditions, and it’s natural tendency to understeer at the limit if not controlled does make it safer for the average driver. If it does happen to overseer however, most people aren’t going to think to get back on the gas to straighten the car out. I know I never did until I started to…
I learned this 5 years ago with a couple Chris Harris YouTube videos, a snowy winter, and my then DD a MK4 GTI. After a decent a mount of practice I could left foot brake and induce overseer on even dry pavement. I can confirm, it totally changed my perspective on FWD cars and indeed on driving in general.
Yeah it seems like a good performance to money ratio to stay where I am, especially given the age of the vehicle and the fact that it’s my DD. That said I’m pretty happy with it. I’d love 300+ whp but given that I’ve spent maybe $1100 total to get where I am (and most of that was the exhaust that needed replacing…
Yeah, nobody... and I mean nobody... ever looks twice at a blue and silver two tone outback
So true. I wanted a WRX, but when I bought my XT I got it for nearly half what some WRXes were listing for with the same year and mileage.
I see... your car sounds like a lot of fun! I know I love mine
foot pounds is actually a measure of work, but no I meant pound foot to describe torque in this case. Oops!
Have you done any mods to it yet? I’ve always worked on and modded my cars, but the XT is the first car I’ve actually done any performance work to. I was fortunate to find a local Subaru guy that really knows his stuff (he crew chiefs for a rally team and I’ve seen cars he does race Mt. Washington) so I felt pretty…
You didn’t mention if that’s at the crank or at the wheels (which I assume is because this article is meant to be humor).
Exactly. It’s a repeat all over again. Love it or hate it (I personally can dig it) I don’t think you can really say “this makes no sense, something like this would never happen.”
I still would want one if I had the kind of money to burn buying cars of this nature, but I lost a bit of enthusiasm after Matt’s recent One Take where it was revealed that depending on the gearing these things top out around 60mph.
Thank you! I know the whole motion blur/panning thing where the car is sharp and everything else is blurry is the “normal” way to photograph race cars, but with that incredible backdrop at Mt. Washington this seemed better. I like that with just the flag lady and the car in the photo it seems extra remote and like it…
There was definitely a lot of great photography on Jalopnik this year... I’m particularly fond of Kristen’s Goodwood sets and I’m always excited when you or others shoot film. I may not be Jalopnik but I’m pretty proud of the shot of this 510 crossing the line at Mt. Washington this year I got on my Pentax K1000 and…
You forgot: buy a $4000 Leica and wear it as a necklace (no disrespect to leica, I’d love one of their cameras... if it were given to me!)
In other words how to become a better street photographer: become a better photographer in general.
I used to hear all sorts of quirky noises on my NA Subarus which I eventually got used to. Now I have a turbo subaru with an exhaust and I can’t hear anything!
While certainly not that big of a wrenching job I had a crappy MK4 Golf GTI a few years back, and as is wont for those things it broke constantly. Back then I still lived at my parents and had to do my wrenching outside, on their gravel driveway. I also live in a place where it’s cold and snowy half the year (as I…
That explains a lot actually... my love of playing hockey and Timmy Hos, etc
