So, you mean that if voting were non-compulsory in Australia, it would turn into the United States?

Yes. The US is proof.

In the US, elections are non-compulsory and on weekdays (republicans prefer it this way). We only get about 40-45% of us to the polls.

:( And obviously lots of people do work on the weekend. Here too, but it’s much more of a culturally accepted thing to get time off to go vote, as it's compulsory here.

Is this my cue to say #notallAustralians?

Australia definitely has some raging shitlord racists, no doubt.

Yeah, I’m a little nonplussed at what this has partially derailed into - pretty obvious my OP wasn’t positing the entire population are shitbats, just that it’s been sourly lulzy watching the shitbats convulse over what kind of shitty they want to be today. We are pretty racist though. /Australian WOC

I’m totally bewildered by the Australia bashing going on here. I have lived in Australia now for a little under a decade. Before that I lived in Ireland, the UK, mainland Europe and America. There is no way Australia is the most racist of those places, in fact it is by far the least racist in my experience.

Clem Ford is wasted in that smh dailylife column, but at least she doesn’t work for the daily telegraph!

I don’t think that he’s even Canadian. He told me off for using the British spelling of a word as in his words “This is North America”

Say it out loud it’s the best stupid insult out there! It allows you to blow off steam and giggle at the same time.

Don’t go thinking there are not people privately and in government working towards change.

And the sausage sizzle. Don't forget the sausage sizzle!

Just to let you know that the “property of the crown” law although not perfect was put in to stop artifacts being sold overseas to fetishist collectors and to stop developers/miners etc from destroying sacred heritage sites.

And I didn't even know until I read it here that US elections aren't held on a weekend when you'd like to think it would be less inconvenient for people to get away from work and do it!

Some Aussies are racist shitbags who judge entire cultures by a few examples of scumhood, sure.

I sometimes wonder how many people would vote in elections, if it wasn't compulsory and deliberately scheduled on Saturday.

Not deflecting at all. Australia is indeed messed up. As are the US. And the UK. If anything you brought up a rather random and common event that happens in many countries even today, and tried to single out one country based on that. An ineffective attempt at making a point that wouldn’t pass muster for a high school

OK, you’re clearly enthusiastic and I was going to let this go, but I see you’re ejaculating all over the comments with this spunk so I can’t.

We are absolute rubbish sometimes.
