Yeah, there wasn’t a huge difference, but — especially if you were listening to headphones — a metal tape would sound slightly muddy on the “normal” CrO2 setting. I always thought it was a bit of a gimmick for audiophiles, but have to admit I could sometimes notice it.

The “metal” setting on the cassette deck was for the type of material the tape was made out of. This was known as “Type IV,” introduced in ‘79 by 3M, and it used pure metal particles instead of oxide formations. For my money, the “Type II” chromium dioxide sounded better and were more versatile.
