Funny, I've been playing through borderlands 2 again (got it in the last ps4 sale) and it's a repetitive game play loop, but it sure is fun.

And also, he was implied to be an engineer with a possible military background, so he may not have been a scientist, he knew how to work tech.

I believe in the game or in one of the comics, the mention Winston getting his doctorate or something. Don't quote me on that, though.
