I think one of the things that appeals to me about this stuff - apart from the mechanical fascination with the devices themselves - is that it's so associated and evocative of turn of the century fairgrounds. This stuff is supremely of its time, but in a good way.

There are a number of different carousel / band organ styles that made this music. My favorite is the Wurlitzer 157 Band Organ. There's a great album on Apple Music and Spotify called "Come to the Fair". Not up on YouTube, though. Here are a few recordings of that same band organ, though.

My interest in turn of the 20th century carousel music. The reaction from friends is that it sounds like serial killer music.

Survivor. I was super invested in the first 5 seasons. I still like those seasons and consider them good TV, but screw watching any more faux-reality crap ever again.

Oh, we're gonna give you lots more reasons to hate avocados real soon.

It just depends on what you're looking for. It's a kid's show and unabashedly so. Evaluated as a kids show, I think the best episodes still hold up really well. The first story arc is a great adaptation of the Barks comic style and kept my young daughter's attention when I showed her. But if you're an adult and don't

I respectfully dispute the simple mathematics that says Huey, Dewey and Louie are automatically better when written as separate characters. For one, it's a solution in search of a problem - over 70 years of adventures with these guys and suddenly now there's a fundamental deficiency in their characters? Moreover,

Huey, Dewey and Louie are totally different in DuckTales, though. That was a Barks innovation from the comics. In the original Donald cartoons they're way brattier.

I'm totally down for PK and Fethry. That'd be something welcome and new for Disney animation.

Eh, this IS still DuckTales, after all, and a loving Scrooge was always an important part of that version of the character.

I liked her, but I like this version too.

I only wish they'd have the guts to actually make him South African. But I understand why they dodged it, and they even got some good jokes out of him being the second richest Scottish duck.

Alan Young is sorely missed, but that's primarily because he was just so brilliant. I love Tennant and all, but I never viewed him as a sure thing for Scrooge.

So I'm a big Barks/DuckTales fan. I just finished the new episode and I thought it was ok. I'd probably give it more like a B or a B-, but I'm still generally positive on it. The animation is very good, but doesn't quite have the classic Disney stamp that the original had. Maybe that's a necessity of the times - it

Was Earthling dismissed? I remember it being pretty well liked. Certainly 'Americans' was pretty hip for 1997.

Not to get into a dispute with someone who knew a lot about ska - I was never really into that scene - but I'm going from this paragraph in a Stereogum profile about the Swing Revival:

Not to pick a fight with Sean here, but we're the same age and I don't really remember a time when people were ostracized for liking Star Wars. Collecting merchandise and stuff had gone a bit underground, sure, but it was still a pretty important cultural touchstone for people our age. I remember seeing it at the

Yeah. That sucked.

Disagree. The secret to Huey, Dewey and Louie is that they've always functioned best as one character in three bodies. Giving them individual personalities sounds like a good idea, but it risks going the Quack Pack route and actually taking away a part of their appeal.

I don't really hear much similarity between Blues Traveller and Gomez, I gotta say.
