You can put it in Airplane mode and still use them separately, you just need to go into settings after you turn it on and there is an option to turn on the controller without the wifi.

Curious why you couldn’t turn off airplane mode once takeoff was finished? From my recent experiences they have changed the rule to Airplane Mode only being required during takeoff and landing.
