That HFE test is essentially geared to give the NA displacement engine a huge advantage. That is the situation best suited for displacement.

You do know that there are gears in the rear differential, right? You can choose from a few different ratios. It is not specified here that they were exactly the same, and this makes a huge difference in real world fuel economy. The transmission gear ratios are surely the same.

And as they said in the article, both came with the same 8 speed auto gearbox.
