Lukewarm take:  the Betelgeuse cartoon (not voiced by Keaton) was pretty damn good.

I’ve not played it yet, but from watching streams, I am most impressed by how they smartly broke rank with the dogmatic Soulslike design “rules”. There is a tendency among game designers (who are obviously also big fans of the SoulsBorne pantheon) to treat those games as holy text. And Aggro Crab said: “Our little

It’s the theater experience, which a LOT of people complain about between the cost and inconvenience. There’s a lot of talk about how these movies failed but it’s not them, it’s theaters.

That’s why I hate when people say they “ironically love” this or that piece of pop culture. You can know a film is bad from a critical view, yet still really enjoy without needing a cover. For instance, there are several problems with bloated Hollywood musical Paint Your Wagon, but man, when I sit and watch Lee Marvin

He’s likely making a modest sum of money of these roadshows, but I will admit that I would feel somewhat uncomfortable actually attending one of these shows, laughing at his work while he is in the same room.  Maybe he’s fully cognizant and completely in on the joke, but it would still feel awkward.

Fury Road would still have worked if he’d called Hardy’s character anything else. Or if Miller had cast an actor around the same age as Gibson to take over the role of Max. Or if he’d changed the script to explain Hardy’s youth.

Cool! I love learning new idioms.

From what I can tell, those two seem to be folded into the Paste house style, as well as its subscription model.  Comments are on both sites, but I believe it is tied to the subscription. The AVC (thus far at least) seems to have maintained its independence.

Paste bought them a while ago. I don’t know that it’s a vast improvement since the change, but it doesn’t seem to be getting drastically worse either. It’s more lke the site is holding steady with maybe a few small signs they are aiming for something better

I hit the end of the current early access content in Hades II over the weekend - like, I could grind for more upgrades, probably will at some point, but I hit two “this part of the game is still under construction” screens - so I started up Final Fantasy 6 Pixel Remaster. And because it’s FF6, one of my favorite

I will admit these stylized, stunty agit-prop documentaries, which were having a bit of moment in the wake of Bowling for Columbine, can be harmful misrepresentations of oft-nuanced issues. However, sometimes it takes some crank making a big stink, yelling “This is not OK!”.

“Nipple drags”?  I tried to suss out the meaning through context, but I’m afraid I’m at a loss.

No Gwimbly, no deal:

Since Fury Road and the first John Wick came out around the same time (well, a year apart, but close enough to count), I had always hoped that FR might also inspire a wave of imitators. I don’t necessarily mean the post-apocalyptic gaspunk thing (though that’s fine, too), but rather the whole thoughtful,

Christ, I’m old...

I’ve noticed this happens from time to time at concerts, usually as a way to encourage the band to come back to the stage for an encore. It always feels so wrong to me. It’s one thing to show your genuine applause for a show you enjoyed, another to use an extended applause as a way to guilt the band into doing an

I believe you, but, unfortunately, in the burgeoning era of FPSes (or “Doom Clones”, as they were often dismissively called back then), I never had access to a proper PC*, so I never really developed the motor skills to use a mouse and keyboard control scheme well. I can do it, but it always feels wierd and

I just finished up the 2 DLC mini-mysteries for The Case of the Golden Idol. Both are pretty short prequels to the events of the main game—3 chapters each—but they expand on the gameplay, introducing new elements and complexity to these macabre puzzles.

I suppose that is why practical FX still impresses, even when CGI has come so far. Audiences can sense the real work, the real stress, that went behind getting it all up on screen. There tends to be a weightless, effortless feel to a lot of big CGI action scenes; the actors are acting with stuff that isn’t there.

Man, Captain sure has some food issues...
