There were a number of anachronistic bits. I think it was A.V. Club that pointed out that AltaVista, the search engine she uses, wasn’t around by that time either. Nor were a few of the prominent selections of pop music.

the Bible was a straight white boys’ club.”

Last Temptation is indeed an excellent and nuanced depiction, though it differs from most adaptations of the Passion story in that it was deliberately written to be a fictional/non-Biblical account.

No, that’s really it. It’s like a 3D object simulation on a computer, but the texture of the object is just colorful noise.

Magic Eye is a lot harder to do if the image isn’t inside a book or on a surface I can hold in my hand. I could almost never get it to work if I couldn’t move the image.

It’s not good for the sex workers who elect to stay in the business. It’s a question of how many do so versus finding other lines of work. The bigger thing is that it makes trafficking an unprofitable enterprise.

When “Song of the South” got pulled from the market, for good reason, the Disney adaptations of Brer Rabbit stories disappeared with it.

There are multiple competing feminist views on sex work. This site leans toward the libertarian approach, while other schools/waves of feminist thought are more inclined to support the Nordic model.

Thanks for that. It’s good food for thought. The piece missing seems to me to be population data; how has the overall number of sex workers changed?

Does this actually line up with the facts? I’ve heard anecdotal evidence of sex workers going “underground” and having to deal with seedier clients, but it also seems that the Nordic model has made a huge impact by reducing overall demand for sex work.

“Black,” as used to describe race, is a term with a great deal of nuance. As is “white.”

Unless they have reverted it, my understanding is that the Oscars implemented ranked-choice voting for the Best Picture category, and that this change was made in conjunction with increasing the number of potential nominees.

It’s an example of why having nominations made solely from a subset of the industry can backfire. Animators apparently didn’t think much of the animation in The Lego Movie. This was in some part understandable from their perspective, since animating rigid 3D geometric objects is considerably less labor-intensive than

I really feel that A Dog should have participated in the writing of this story.

I’d say Best Animated counts as a “big” award.

On the flipside, the nomination process for Best Animated is apparently handled by animators, which can periodically yield undeserved snubs, as with The Lego Movie.

Will he bless the rains down in Africa?

Have you considered that you might have a higher population with access to industrial technology than the Earth did in the 19th century?

It’s comedy of the absurd, like “Waiting for Godot.” I’m surprised it did as well as it did, as the market for that genre is a small niche.

Don’t feel bad about its pricing. Companies often earn more with lower prices than with high prices if the lower price drives a sufficiently higher rate of sales.
