I do have some similar criticism of BR as a format. It gives content developers too much room to play with as compared to the super-simple interactions available in DVD.

What sort of “true sense of the word” are you using? No format war has ever been a fair competition solely on the merits of the technology. It’s always been about attracting both customers and related businesses to a platform, and for the business side, contractual negotiations are part of the process.
