The other thing that was tricky was people players clones had to get used to their characters dying over and over.
Streamlined and modernized? I liked the clunky buried underground in the 1980's vibe of the original! As long as the characters always die, I guess it's okay.

That's a really good point. I have a hard time remembering the order I learned these games in. Once you've learned one, the others are pretty easy to grasp.

You should give bridge a try! It's very similar, but trump shifts and the team strategy is pretty subtle. I like Spades and pretty much any game of this type.
