If the dealer model is so superior to the direct model, why do the dealers need to sue Tesla over it at all? After all, who would buy direct when they could buy from a dealer otherwise? No one NEEDS to buy a Tesla, there are plenty of other brands out there and there are even other electric cars.

Direct sales favor the consumer because you don’t have to pay the dealer. You don’t have to pay their mark up over invoice. And you are wrong that this would increase prices: car makers still have to compete with other car makers.
