They don’t allow you to turn it off (similar effect to removing the key) and some flash a message telling you to select park.

It seems like the main shortfall of this (other than making a simple thing complicated) is that there is no fail-safe like other implementations have. This seems like a fairly major oversight, particularly if they weren’t the first to implement this. Hopefully they can do something quickly to prevent further tragedies.
