You can get a decent used modem for a pittance on eBay (mine set me back $15 and that was *with* shipping) though I would recommend getting a new router, if you need the wifi. Still, that’s maybe $60 unless you NEED something Fanceh. $30 if you wait for a sale. (I am a poor and love my electronic luxuries.)
