It is absolutely true that religion can be poison. And yes, there are awful things in many religious texts, but this also ignores things that spur people to do the right thing, helping the homeless, caring for the sick and elderly, you know.. occasionally not oppressing people.

I wouldn't argue that the religious texts themselves are evil, but it's their interpretation that's trouble. When we have books in dead languages that are a few thousand years old, it's not uncommon for evil people to bend these texts to their will, influencing people who don't know any better.
