Linear doesn’t mean corridor. Linear just means very controlled and directed. RE7 also gives you a lot of freedom to explore areas, but is still very linear when it comes to setting a path for you.

The more linear your horror game is the better. The thing about a linear game is that you have tighter control over the player’s progression. With this control you can keep the pacing for scares and suspense.

Open world horror could work, but it would be very hard to control the pacing of said horror.
