Yes, the Three of Coins was patched a while back. I got 3 exotic drops the first week using it. I wasn’t using the exploit, I would just pop one before a boss fight while playing through the story. Since the nerf I have had zero exotic drops.

The best thing to do is to get the collected editions. Each volume is essentially a single story arc that’s largely self contained, though some volumes are smaller one-shot stories in between the bigger arcs.
