Probably because the word sounds sexy. People buy wedding rings as an alternative to gold, if I remember correctly.

I appreciate the info, makes sense.

I mean, we already have plenty of people that will tune in to watch video game races where the cars don’t exist.

Exactly. It’s called rail dust. I started seeing those orange specks on my pearl white Volt. They rub off because they’re on top of the clear coat, but on SS they’d be hell. Crazy how much metal is on the roads

i also wouldn’t be shocked if they skipped passivating it

You can thank my Silverado for contributing to the road rust.

I came here to comment on the same thing. If you ask any boilermaker that’s built a stainless tank they’ll tell you, you can’t use carbon steel tools on stainless because of the carbon impregnation you’ll get.

I mean... The 60s/70s were also a very different time than even the 90s or 00s...

This!

This is the answer right here, it happens to painted cars too, it's just obvious it's metal stuck to the car, and easy to get off.  There's actually some sealants that prevent the steel from sticking in the first place, not sure if it works on stainless, but sounds like the cybertrucks need it 😂

Agreed, given the slight conditions of the exposure and the reported pitting/orange spots, 301 is likely, probably not 304. 316 has a higher molybdenum and nickel content and so has more corrosion resistance if other elements are in play like salt or other metals.

So, instead of waxing occasionally, owners should passivate the body panels with a nitric acid bath?

That’s some great information I was not aware of. So I know Deloreans will rust too but they were never like what is being reported based on my vague recall. They are 304. A lot more metallic brake pads back in their heyday as well...

Does the corrosion spread from the non-stainless dust/particles to the stainless panels themselves? Sorry if that’s a dumb question

Anybody who’s left a stainless knife or tool outside for a few days has been saying this from the start.

Well you can never escape the industrial fallout all over the roads, so I guess this was doomed from the drawing board?

Learned something new today. Thanks!

Its almost as if,... bare steel may have been a poor choice for an automobile finish?

K swap would be excellent for an updated Elise

C’mon man, get outta here with that decree that the kids WILL need therapy.
