Sure they can, well soon they could anyway..

That entire VF article left me with the impression that whomever wrote it 1) didn't read the book and 2) seems to not understand what fictitious t.v. shows are.

It sounds like she is mostly disputing the show but some of the book as well.

Aaaaackkkk...why is there a comma here?? Shouldn't it just read "maybe this is a bad time to say hi."

You can use the toilet to talk to eachother because the sound carries through the plumbing to adjascent cells.

She's taking about the show. But Piper Kerman has already repeatedly said that the show takes liberties, and alters things that were in the book. She did a Reddit AMA in which she said:

I think the show. What she reiterates here is pretty much in line with the book.

They are transphobic. When trans women are saying this perhaps people should listen rather than dismiss them.

Okay, dude, whatever. Now you're just being obtuse and condescending. I did go to both undergraduate and graduate school and I have been working in journalism on and off for over a decade.

Wait what, what are you even talking about? I am saying that there are slurs which can be reclaimed by some and not reclaimed by others (although I don't fully like this, I acknowledge many people in marginalised communities believe this).

Thank you for writing this piece, Kat. I really appreciate your insights and opinion on this matter. I hope that this discussion creates more awareness of the transphobia (and other forms of discrimination & bigotry) found even within historically marginalized communities, whether they are intentional or not. Because

I know all of this. I stand by my belief that the use of the terms needs to end. Period.

Nobody owns any terminology? An observation that a lot of transwomen are hurt by RuPaul's use of the term "tr****" or a derivative of "she-male" is not something anyone should be offended by. It's up to RuPaul to make the change if he doesn't want to hurt people. If he doesn't care, fine, whatever, but he shouldn't

uh, I don't think that's the point. I think the idea of "herstory" is just a play on words that refers to the concept that most traditional history is by men, about men and ignores women. I don't think people believe the term "history" is sexist as a word...

Read his remarks on his use of "tranny." Pretty transphobic sounding to me.

Ironic that it takes bashing cis women's bodies for anyone to start giving a shit about the blatant transphobia that show has been putting out for years.

Its the whole segment using transphobic language and bringing cis women into it. Making fun of Chyna?

He should know better, but he's been doing this for years.

That bigotry is not the same, and I'm not even sure I believe in the idea of "owning" terminology. Maybe I need to stop using "dyke" to be fully consistent. I'm okay with that. But notice I said, I never use "faggot" or "faerie" or other terms directed at me in error. I cannot be these things, they do not apply to me.

It more than the words even. Its the whole segment using transphobic language and bringing cis women into it. Making fun of Chyna? Not fucking cool. Even if I gave some credence to gay cis men 'reclaiming' the word in question(I don't for the record), how does that excuse explain making fun of cis women who don't
