Apple has very intense guidelines on App performance, so especially with how buggy the google voice app is currently by all means, please update your apps, you should see some significant improvements.

Google Voice lets you text and talk to anyone in the USA/Canada for free!
You can call over wifi/LTE instead of the crappy American voice networks.
