I think a lot of the disconnect here is between people who are the friend that often gets unloaded on, and people who are not. I am the type of person that people trust with their problems. I feel honoured by that and I want to always live up to that trust — but sometimes I can’t. If I’ve got 5 people telling me all

I’m 35, I’ve never felt older than I did scrolling through this list.

I once saw a physicist get so mad about this convo in an unrelated threat that they laboriously broke down the maths showing why the door couldn’t have supported their weight. He even researched what kind of timber the doors would have been on the ship. I’ve never forgotten it. I love scientific rage.

I really think we need to be leaning on the extreme difference between $5 million, $50 million, and a billion dollars, because it seems like a lot of people can’t actually grasp how much money the super rich have proportionally to everybody else. The ‘spend Bill Gates’ money’ app is the first time I really understood

I also think that if, tactically, we have to reassure millionaires to get at billionaires, we might just have to live with that.

I don’t watch the show but putting his arm around a woman while she’s sleeping seems like a pretty extreme intrusion to me, especially in an environment where people are so vulnerable, and I would absolutely consider it wise to remove him.

In that case fuck Netflix

She’s buzzy right now, which should come with a bump in her fee.

That’s pretty damning. This lawsuit will go nowhere but hopefully the publicity will get embarrassing for Netflix.

This doesn’t seem like it is going to end well for her.

I don’t blame her either, I also have a fragile ego and would probably have a meltdown in the entertainment industry, haha.

Yeah, I was thinking that it would be a clearer issue to me if it was Tiffany Haddish or Wanda Sykes.

Genuine question: Is Mo’nique really that popular in the US? Because I fully believe Netflix is capable of racial and gender discrimination, but also from an Australian perspective I don’t really know her outside of Precious, whereas people like Seinfeld, Chapelle and Schumer are household names.

Thank you for your service, Lentil 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

For the record, she’s not a teenage girl, IIRC she graduated in 2017.

People have assumed this and it’s probably true, but you’d be surprised how insensitive people can be when it comes to pointing negative criticism out to writers/musicians/artists — I’d just as easily believe that a fan/friend/family member sent it to her because they were outraged by it.

I’d be a lot more sympathetic to including the quote if it had some kind of more detailed critique, like, ‘I didn’t want them to include books by Sarah Dessen because I don’t think they’re representative of ...’ whatever. I just don’t think there’s any way to spin ‘they’re fine for teenage girls’ as anything but dismis

I assume it’s not what you intended, but this take strikes me as ableist. You know who usually finds comfort and inspiration from a dog who is different? Children who are different. I don’t see why we want to shit on that.

I don’t think it was smart or kind of Dessen to respond but that doesn’t mean I don’t understand her hurt feelings.

It wasn’t a school paper though, it was the local paper. I don’t think it’s bad to be mindful when you talk to a journalist, and think about exactly what thoughts you would communicate to the world.
