The shoes thing, oh my god. I’m 5’10” with wide size 45 feet. I remember crying in a shoe shop as a teenager because the only shoes they had in my size were beige sandals for 80 year old women. It’s gotten a bit better in the last decade or so, but that really left a mark.

I feel like there is no-one mean girls are more vicious towards than an extremely beautiful girl with poor self-esteem.

It’s pretty clear the government sentencing request was political, I’d be pissed if I was the judge too since it’s his record that will be blemished if it’s overturned on appeal. 12 years on probation seems insane for a non-violent crime. Surely that is wasting resources that could be used elsewhere.

Nah, the initial acknowledgment of the bad act is all good to me, and even deciding you personally won’t support that person anymore is fine. ‘Cancelling’ to me is the extended lobbying campaign that comes after that, where people try to influence others to stop supporting the cancelled. It can often come along with

I’m a woman with a deep voice and deadpan delivery. Men take me seriously 125% of the time, but thankfully their cluelessness often makes it funnier for me.

I think people tend to make an automatic link between call outs and cancellation culture too, but they are linked by habit rather than inevitability. Talking to somebody about how their words and actions hurt you is great. It’s what comes after that is the problem.

lol ok

The way it manifests is new, at least where I live (Australia). It’s a lot more open and people who wouldn’t participate in a bullying campaign will either join in on the cancellation or at the very least not intervene. I don’t remember ever seeing a whole community join in on bullying like that before the last few

I think the problem with saying cancel culture doesn’t exist is that it assumes it always stays in the realm of famous (or famous-adjacent) people who can get publicity for their brand, but I’m not sure that’s the case. Anecdotally, I’ve heard from a psychologist friend that she’s starting to see more cases of

I’m not saying reddit is perfect by any stretch of the imagination but I see people patiently discussing their disagreements far more there than any of the other platforms I use, where people seem to be primarily interested in proving themselves right. I think there is a population on reddit who are driven primarily

I completely agree that this characterises people on all sides and social media has exacerbated the issue exponentially. I used to feel really optimistic about the democratic potential of social media but that optimism has been truly crushed in the last few years because of the echo chambers people exist in. Beyond

Queen or King also seems to be irrelevant in the history of violent colonisation. If every leader in the world was a woman I am guessing we would have just as many wars as we do now.

This is something I think about a lot when I see self-congratulatory tweets from straight cis women about how men’s violence is the problem. Like yeah, maybe mostly, but that’s because we don’t have as many examples of women in positions of power that they can exploit, not because women are Intrinsically Good and

Ps I also think the Confederate show could have been really interesting and it’s frustrating that a kneejerk reaction to a terrible press release killed it. Sure, if you say the Game of Thrones guys are in charge of it it sounds terrible, but if you say Nichelle Tramble Spellman, a black woman who was a writer and

The 13 Reasons Why example is one of the reasons I find the overuse of the dangerous label frustrating. When it was first released I remember trying to explain to people that the criticism meant it literally — that the way the show explicitly depicted suicide has been credibly linked to triggering suicide attempts in

Yeah, I understand that a lot of the attention on twitter would have been slut-shaming, but it’s still worth talking about how little she made. Somebody is making a fortune from her image. It’s infuriating that she doesn’t share in that. She’s just like any other exploited creative or content-maker.

I grew up in the same area the Hemsworths lived in during high school. We went to different schools but I know people who know them and they apparently were/are extremely normal and low-key. I’ve never heard anything bad about any of them.

It’s not just wealth. It’s shocking how many people will let their kids be around known predators. Sometimes it’s social pressure eg church communities, but sometimes it’s just that predators are really good at targeting victims to groom, and that means the parents as much as the kids.

I think they’ve been having more and more trouble getting the core cast to stay. I check in every few years and it seems like even the characters who are still there are only around half of them time. The team is only half-full in most of the episodes.

I believe the guy that was bit but I also think there could be a far less diva-ish explanation for Perrette’s actions, eg hypervigilance as a result of PTSD (related to the attack mentioned above) caused her to have an outsized reaction to the danger posed by the dog. People can be unreasonable without necessarily
