Perfect analogy.
Perfect analogy.
‘Do you think this could work? Obviously I’m not an expert like you...’
I definitely do it just to make my life easier. I usually get my way if I take this approach. I’ve started noticing that a lot of project directors are now explicitly bypassing my more direct male coworker even though he is more senior, and I’m almost certain it’s because I’m perceived as ‘easier’ than he is even…
‘I’m probably wrong, but...’
I thought of therapy too. Always non-inflammatory ‘I’ statements.
That’s great. I’ve never seen it, I’ll have to check it out.
I can't think of any either. Lame, Hollywood.
Yes. We put so much pressure on survivors to set aside their personal wellbeing for the sake of a happy family reunion. What purpose does it serve?
Probably a combination of the two. I think a lot of survivors know there’s not usually a neat and cheerful ending to the story so accurate depictions rarely make it to the mainstream screen because audiences just aren't interested if they can't have the closure of a touching forgiveness scene.
I only met my grandmother a couple of times and I am totally fine with that. Your child will be too. People need to mind their own fucking business.
Yes. It’s definitely a combination of hope that one day the family member will love them the way they deserve and the social indoctrination that ‘good’ people don't turn their backs on family.
I’m always confused by this too. Shouldn’t people just hold doors open for people...
We need more representation of people who are comfortable being estranged from their families. TV characters are always like, my parent was an abusive drunk but the worst thing they ever did was abandon me, I’m tortured because I secretly deeply want to reconnect! Obviously there are some people who feel that way, but…
I just found this comment from the OP of the story that says she’s from New Hampshire: http://jezebel.com/these-motherfu…
Yeah, I don’t believe the story because everything about the prose reads very American (I’m Aussie — we fall somewhere between the UK and US, but I usually notice the differences).
An Australian election was called for early June a couple of weeks ago and everyone here is horrified about how long the campaign will be.
You don’t have to stop these specific guys, but studies have shown that young men are more likely to intervene against violence against women if they’re aware that their male peers disapprove of attacking women, even if the intervener himself holds sexist views. So just by occasionally bringing up how lame you think…
Also “I’m sure this happens to lots of men too”
Wish I’d had you with me the other day when I eventually had to just walk out on a friend who was wilfully refusing to accept that sexism is still a shaping force in women’s lives.
I get that some of his excuses are valid, but when there are so many weird racist problems to solve I just start to wonder why they chose this particular comic to adapt — choose one of your hundred other properties instead.
