I haven't watched Raymond in forever but still remember that episode. I definitely admire the skill whether coming up with that randomly in the writers' room or consciously plotting it out.

They out and out talked about the symbolism of the chair on the show in pretty much these same terms. It was neat when the show pointed it out and acknowledged they were dealing with people over-analyzing things; it seems like someone just watched a rerun here.
