I've seen software where a USB dongle is used to verify the license for the software. It's fairly simple, difficult to impossible to crack, and I can see automakers setting a USB ignition key up to operate like this "for safety reasons."

The problem is that USB sticks die. I'm going to guess that someone will make a proprietary key file that you must get from the dealer. This will cost a large amount of money for no other reason than the fact that they can charge it.
