He say 15 years ago, which means 2008 and the 7th generation of consoles. Which was all around a pretty shitty time for most japanese devs. The was a large amount of general xenophobia or just outright racism towards japanese game not getting with the times and all that. So really this tracks.

I replayed Part II recently, and specifically with the Mel/Ellie confrontation you’re talking about, I don’t see that it was forced. The game (and script) did a lot of legwork to make that all come together. You didn’t realize it at the time while playing as Ellie, it was a “oops, other people just happen to be here”…

He didn’t die because of his actions— it was Abby’s actions that killed him.

Absolutely! When Part 2 was announced, there was a lot of discourse around whether or not the original game needed a sequel. Now I can’t imagine the story having ended with the first game. 

The discourse around 2, made me see how many people misinterpreted the entire story/ending and how they couldn’t separate the character of Joel from that of a stereotypical game protagonist.

Worth mentioning, Ashley Johnson will also be in that episode.

I actually never got around to playing the DLC, so I’m kinda looking forward to experiencing it with no first hand experience beyond having a general idea of the narrative and setting.
