Smashing is less done at home, but every store with a press grill, and especially uses fresh instead of frozen, is crushing.  I think you have to distinguish between crushing and crust, because quite frankly, caramelizing meat is probably unhealthy and carcinogenic.

At my store we use seasoning salt on burgers.  My main issue with salting meat and then putting it on the grill, is that at least in moderate amounts it tends to increase sticking, so that that crust can be kind of stuck on the grill.  We use a Keating Miraclean, chromed grill, so I guess it is less of an issue if…
