Oh I guarantee you the Queen has been to many famers’ markets. Britain has several market towns, which are larger towns that people would come to once or twice a week on designated market days to buy and sell stuff. They were doing this throughout the 1980s. They were favorite stops of politicians. Probably swept away

And, because she is the super-patriotic Queen, she drinks 40s of Olde English 800 exclusively.

Oh God, I still remember the smell of those plastic masks, something I haven’t thought of in 40 years. I also started wearing glasses at the age of 6 and those masks were not spectacles-friendly.

Nice (the city) is nice (the adjective.) It’s the Miami Beach of France. It used to be haunted by retirees from Britain and Germany but they all moved over to Spain. 10/10, would go again, for the 18th or 19th time.

I had a friend (really, an acquaintance of a friend) who had a fetish for Catholic seminarians, to the point where he rented an apartment near one and attended daily Mass (he was Jewish.) Better they take their urges out on him than an unsuspecting 9-year-old altar boy, I guess, but still.

Oh God that’s awful. I have never heard of the Plymouth Brethren but it sounds Christian-ish, like Mormonism, do they believe in an afterlife? Imagine gladly consigning your own child to Hell.

i feel like its coming...and shit, maybe on day one clinton will show up with a stack of policies and be all “i aint got much time and you all hate me anyway” and roll out some amazing shit.

Did you live in MA or DC in 1972? If not, your fellow citizens mostly felt differently.

I once made the mistake of sleeping with a closeted gay male Mormon. I was the first person he had ever had sex with. I was 20, he was about 23 if I remember correctly. Twenty-three years of pent-up sexual frustration. I don’t think we slept for like four days. I still get a twinge in one of my elbows when the weather

I’ll tell you why. In New York we have a very small (but growing) Mexican population. Decent Mexican food is hard to find in these parts. There used to be a couple of hole-in-the-wall Mexican take-out places/restaurants in Hell’s Kitchen that were amazing. Gone, pushed out, buildings condemned and high-priced towers

Is Newt’s mother still alive? Probably not but I’d like to get her take on all of this:

I think the more shocking thing is that anyone on earth, especially gay men, found Will’s character convincing. Not the situation or the plot line, funny, whatever, “Friends,” “Seinfeld” (especially when the Seinfeld folks pretended to be non-Jewish) but those horribly awkward scenes where Will has to read lines

My husband and his mother were very close. She once called his cellphone and got his voicemail and after a while with no call back she called me in a panic.

And Henry James.

I saw that typo and decided to leave it, since it also applies to a few of the guys my friends have married.

I posted this same kind of recovered memory in a comment above. I think that was Ron. I definitely remember that last name though.

Doesn’t Fred have a brother named Ron who used to write for Gawker a long time ago, like over a decade ago? Or who used to comment a lot? Or maybe I’m thinking of The Awl. Congrats to both of them on their last name. I can’t remember the first names of the souses of some of my friends, but they I remember from 2004 or

Where in Boston did they let Popeye’s paint those beautiful bowfronts those garish corporate colors? Near Fenway Park, I assume?

An English friend of mine was all upset because her quintessentially English Home Counties village had an Evangelical church open near her and she was upset with the congregants it drew, whom she termed “happy-clappies.” They proably have read a Chick tract or two or two hundred.
