I have no issues downloading a podcast or updating/downloading apps while say, reading in Kindle or iBooks on my iPad2. Maybe that's exclusive to the iTunes and the App store, I'm not sure.

I hope this isn't related to screen size. If anything I'd want a larger screen.

Just gave the app a whirl, me likey. Especially the way they put the ads on the load screen as opposed to a banner on every screen. Load times are pretty quick too.
