Immobilizer chip keys started in the 90's. Most of the cost I think these days is every car has to have a key specific to that car, then there’s different ones based off trim level and equipment. I.E. Power tailgates, remote start, etc.

A simple powertrain only warranty for a year would probably only run a few hundred bucks.
