I think a big factor is that — in the US, at least — the reality shows that get the most publicity are the most tawdry ones. Shows like the PBS/C4 House shows or the professional competence of Face Off don’t get the attention that shows like The Bad Girls Club or a Joe Millionaire does.

I think the idea is that we’re supposed to be having as many babies as possible to keep a flow of souls going to God or something like that. So being gay is bad because you’re not having babies and abortion is bad because you’re not having babies (also for birth control).
