That’s correct but in the story, no one was supposed to know they were creatures and not robots. So it was a creative choice to have the difficult moving parts be flexible, it’s nothing to do with the story or the true nature of the robots.

As someone who makes 3D models of humanoid mechs, I can tell you that making one this flexible while still retaining the robot look is a feat of engineering. It’s extremely hard to make limbs that have such a range of articulation when you have a crap load of rigid armor than can’t bend.
