It was WM, and you're also right about it being an abbreviation for William. My grandfather used it.

If I'm not mistaken, it was a character that Willis conceived of years prior to the release. He also had a hand in shaping the story (and even wrote a song about the character). Complete with the skyrocketing budget and apparently no one telling him "no," it as much a vanity project as "Battlefield Earth."
