Excellent insight, particularly regarding Call of Duty. Indeed, we Arabs already call it Call of Duty and translating it into completely different Arabic words doesn't make sense from a marketing perspective.

I would've gone with "qaf" myself before the "zain"...though I'm not sure if the pronunciation carries over in other accents, which is another interesting point to talk about.
Yes. Watch Dogs indeed doesn't translate well at all into Arabic. It loses the figurative meaning of the term and what the title is about. Witcher can be translated into Arabic and still keep its meaning; "Al-Sahir" or he who deals with magic.
Well said. Absolutely agree with the fact that the gaming community has been fast-growing in Saudi Arabia. As someone who lives in Jeddah, it's great to see this.
Pokemon is no longer banned here. That's old, old 90s news. Pokemon games are freely being sold here since their inception. As for God of War, true, the physical copies are banned here due to use of the word "God" in the title as our use of the word God should refer to the one God we believe in. The digital versions…
What I mean is that if you translate Watch Dogs into Arabic, it would literally refer to Watch Dogs as opposed to the figurative meaning of the term. We'll have to look for something more blunt in Arabic referring to hackers in the shadows or something of that sort.
Yeah, you're right. That would make a good translation...but Kilab Al-Hirasa doesn't have the same ring to it as Watch Dogs. The Arabic seems to lean towards literal Watch Dogs instead of figurative as opposed to the English term.
Arabic is my native language. I have to say...these are really good! Interesting to note is that all the main titles are simply the English pronunciations written with Arabic letters. While the subtitles of Call of Duty and Wolfenstein (Advanced Warfare and The New Order) are actual direct translations of the words…
Excellent in-depth interviews. I love the fact that a lot of effort was put into getting the OST up to snuff and having live instruments and improvisation. Love the jazzy/funky feel of the music.
Personally, I wasn't annoyed with Skyward's Sword so-called tutorial. Because it immersed me in the game world via plot, NPC characters, etc. To me, it didn't feel like a dry and drab tutorial. I get Aonuma's mentality, though. He was overzealous because it's the first motion-focused Zelda game so he felt the need to…
That is so...weird to watch. I always see Aonuma in a serious light so this GIF caught me off-guard. He looks so excited while doing that in the original video.
It's truly insane that we're still finding glitches of this original classic in 2014. Admittedly, however, it looks really complex to perform seeing that you have to beat the game once already. It's much easier to perform the existing infinite 1up glitch.
I shouldn't have generalized. My fault. Not all games mirror real life, only some do. I meant to mainly point out Anita's examples. Some of the examples Anita mentions in her video tend to lean towards realism, while some are fantasy based. The common theme with her examples is the characterization; whether fantasy or…
Excellent suggestions! Playing games which contain your example would definitely be entertaining and meaningful.
I'm surprised that Anita doesn't think the same. When you put it that way, it makes sense. But she says that including male sex workers doesn't solve the problem in her video.
No need to thank me, dude. This is definitely one of those agree to disagree topics depending on your life experiences and your culture/beliefs. We may disregard each other as wrong but ultimately from a bird's eye view there's no wrong. No need for insults or anything of that sort.
One might argue that this is the sort of freedom that comes with a price. Individuality and freedom make other cultures unique as well, even if they're looking down upon things which are deemed immoral to them. After all, that's part of freedom of choice. If there were no rules, the world would be in chaos. There…
All kinds of prostitiution contain exploitation, right? What sorts of prositiution doesn't?
Very educational and well put together episode. When Anita covers modern games, they tend to be more solid arguments for her subjects. I find as soon as she picks classics to talk about, she tends to really overthink things to a fault.
Agreed. Nintendo's 2014 release schedule is very light until Hyrule Warriors on September. I'm assuming they left some things out from the digital event. The Virtual Console and digital titles are mandatory at this point and hopefully future Nintendo Directs show this.
