I find it kind of crazy that Morhaime even feels the need to announce the cancellation of a project no one knew the details about other than a temporary production name (which was gleaned from a leaked product timeline no less) and that it might support multiple players online.

The only problem people seem to be having here, in all honesty, is the fact that Schafer refuses to treat game development like everyone seems to want it to be treated: institutionalized martyring.

I don't think anyone could string together more than 10 seconds of random footage from this game that I would be able to play through without installing a battery of 200 watt flood lights in my living room.

The worst offender is Jack's waffle sandwich. I've had.. too many of these.

What ever happened to all hallows eve? We used to have stupid amounts of marketing around Halloween schlock and now we're supposed to be buying fake snow instead of fake spiderwebs? Santa costumes instead of Satan costumes?

The main problem with all the points is Minecraft has been an indie darling. Being an indie darling extends the long tail with children and keeps up the public face of the community with modders and video casters willing to dedicate time to it.

An excellent primer/example to all this can be had by watching the Excellent Adventures series on the cross counter youtube/twitch channel with Mike Ross and gootecks. Or just finding Mike Ross and talking to him at length.

Universities actually had a pretty good cross-national network going on their own at the time, which might be your "scientists" thing but it was certainly used for a lot more (maybe "more" since it wasn't necessarily serious business going on) than just collaborative communication.
