This is emotional abuse, without a doubt. I would speculate this isn’t the first time he’s been emotionally abusive, though possibly not this obviously.

Classic verbose abuser-as-victim. The several I’ve known have a unique ability with the written word, it really shines when they are feeling persecuted. The formal tone with condescension, judgment and blame sprinkled in. The overly-multisyllabic screed that tries to hide ‘wah-wahh, poor me’.

I agree completely. There’s also the ‘positive’ spin to what you’ve described, the “Marriage takes work!” and “It’s not always easy, but good relationships take effort...” - beliefs we grow up with, hear from smug marrieds (thanks, Bridget!) and see shared as judgy memes on social media.
