Well we're not all scientists with a thousand strong research group that we can ask. If we see a piece of research of course we are going to relate it to our own experience. What else do we have to compare it to?

That last bit, about the authorities not wanting to know lest they have to do something, sounds dead on. And yes, probably escaped/released exotic pets, but still now in the wild and endangered animals, so they'd have to be protected. God forbid Fish and Wildlife do its job...
