@The Cap'n: No they don't. Publishers WILL start releasing all games as download-only, at which point you will have no choice. They will do this because it lowers distribution costs, and more importantly, prevents piracy and used game sales.

Valve would probably be cool free licensing Portal for educational purposes. Just a hunch.

This comment is only semi-related to the article, but I've long felt companies like Apple would be doing a huge public service by bundling better ear buds that actually provided some sound insulation. Cheap headphones are about as audible to everyone else as they are to the person with the iPod or whatever.

At some point, we, as a society need to embrace our ability to freely spread digital media. I'm reminded of the government initiative during the Great Depression, in which excess food stores were withheld from starving people to prop up food prices and "restore" the economy. The point? A straightforward Capitalist

Gravity Hook — the thinking man's Canabalt.

@imsh_pl: 50 GB? I download that much all the time (perhaps it's several movies or what have you, but still). With a regular Cable broadband connection it wouldn't take that long. You're also forgetting the many, many titles that are either downloadable (hence small), or are simply not that big to begin with. Very few

@PinballFan: Yep. It's insane that people take it so lightly.

I'm not saying this article is dismissing the danger of texting while driving, but it bothers me that people are able to speak about the practice in an at all casual tone (we've all done it). People are less willing to admit to drunk driving, even though it's less dangerous.

I'm not sure I agree (assuming we're talking about a mythical Apple TV, and not some product that will be imminently released).

Apparently it's should be quite easy to port iPad apps to the rumored specs, so that bodes well.

You really have to question many deeper paradigms in our society. We invent the ability to more or less freely distribute media that brings joy to all who partake, yet the biggest concern is over the relatively few people who produce said media. There must be a non-Capitalist solution to this problem, but it's

@Harpsichord: Yeah, I'm hoping a pressure-sensitive wireless pen isn't far off (more realistic than a pressure-sensitive tablet).

It's also worth pointing out that the highest grossing movies over the past few years have been all based on... wait for it... comic books about guys in tights. Comic books are largely suffering because video games and modern cinema provide the sort of content he derides with more punch. I say this as a comic fan, but

Photoshop touch control (or, screw that, CS touch control) makes a whole lot more sense for a free Adobe app, given that it enhances the value of their pay products. I would kill for that actually.

Yeah, the gray market in China is barely gray. Last time I was in Beijing there were massive Xbox signs and billboards everywhere. Much like everything, "totalitarianism" = no regulation with the occasional violent military sweep.

There will come a time when the general public understands the concept of "jail breaking" (you know, like in Asia), at which point Apple will have to loosen the reigns a little.

It's got to be taxes. My Danish family pays double or triple what I (an American) would on CDs, cars, computers — basically anything. In that case, it's not an import tariff, but sales tax, which is quite high to pay for government services. On the flipside, you can't be homeless, get free travel, free education, and

I've been saying this for a long time now. The simple fact is that Apple does not screen apps for quality (many apps simply do not work with some version of the iphone/ipod/ipad). I imagine a trial policy would have the added benefit of weeding out many garbage apps altogether, as garbage app devs know they can profit

Unfettered Capitalism at work, bringing our Internet infrastructure into the 1990s.

Totally agree about "active" battle systems — why am I being forced to rapidly navigate menus? The only game to perfectly mix action and RPG, in my mind, is Valkyria Chronicles (a totally unique system, as far as I know).
