They have to, because they use longitudinal FWD architecture (sending power to the back as well for Quattro). The alternative is to move the transmission to a transaxle and running additional propshafts back up front to power the front wheels (this would have also made it a RWD based Quattro system).

Your AC doesn’t need a recharge, you have a leak. R134a doesn’t degrade, your AC is a closed system. If your AC isn’t as cold as it once was you have a leak or a component needs to be replaced. A recharge just pushes a problem down the road.
