I was recently called for jury duty but the cases all settled before voir dire. Last time I served I recall them asking if any of us were more or less likely to believe a person’s testimony if they “happened” to be an officer of the law.

Yes, I was worried when I first heard the rumors about his whole campaign being a set-up for a cable news network. Then I remembered his track record. I feel a lot calmer now.

Perhaps an entirely different office with an entirely different culture is the only way. Something between a social worker and a police officer, for cases where no crime has been committed but we as a society still want to intervene — wellness checks, suicide interventions, etc.

Thank you for being there for those kids, to the extent that you are able. It’s heartbreaking that CYA policies put you in such a lousy situation. (Break protocol and never be able to help another kid, or stand and watch this one get roughed up or worse?)

I think there’s something about emotional perceptiveness without the usual filters of polite culture. It’s really hard to silence that little voice that says “don’t be rude, give them the benefit of the doubt” - which is normally a good thing.
