men in my family did it for years because they all had the same first name; and legally that remained their name, but everyone refered to them by their middle name. since they never legally changed their names, that was how they always signed everything.

How people are treated = / = legal rights. In some states, husband/wife doesn’t necessarily give legal rights over medical decisions that outweigh that of blood relatives unless there is a medical proxy in place (or have people forgotten Terry Savio that easily?
