You nailed it. The focal point is carefully determined and calculated with a specific electrical arc shape and temperature (kelvin/color range). Insert any type of bulb that has a different arc (looking at you shitty aftermarket xenon HID), then the focal point is lost and light is just thrown about in the relfector.
