I always pictured Gotham as New York and Metropolis as Chicago (making it relatively close-ish to Smallville KS)

I agree, I liked the more animalistic design. He looked a living breathing agile creature. If they only could have given him the fire breath. That caused me actual pain when he didn't do it.
