My takeaway from your post. Since most drivers are shit when sober, we cannot tolerate any additional impairment.

Yes, the cop should have stopped to render aid.
Because you dared to humanize the boogeyman (I’m also not defending this cop as regardless of the situation around the accident he should have stopped and checked on the kid).
Trying to give this guy the benefit of the doubt, I thought maybe NY had a .02 legal limit or something really low in 1984, and his argument was that it should be higher, he just failed use words to say that.
I have re-read my post and I have no idea how you reach the conclusion that I am defending this or any cop. Many cops do their jobs well but they also defend and cover for those that don’t. Many other cops are bullies and cowards which this officer may eventually prove to be. If so, he should be fired for terrible…

It’s possible for things to be both bad and overly prosecuted.
But the kid is a KID.
Exactly why...
I get your point but, as in most cases, we legislate for the lowest common denominator. It’s why the speed limit is set so low for instance. I can easily drive 90+ in relative safety in my new performance car, but since there are going to be people in their 90's driving a 50 year old car on the same road, that makes…

Well, the New York Times Editorial Board regularly gives column space to the likes of Ross Douchehat and Maureen Dowd, so it hasn’t really changed that much at all.
Humans that have standards they are expected to adhere to, that they swear to adhere to, and when they fail to do so there can be major repercussions. I’m only human too but I sure as hell get held accountable when I fuck up.
No question the CHP officer should have stopped to check on the kid after he made contact with the car. I would suspect the optics of this situation will lead the CHP to apologize and discipline the officer, etc.
One bad apple.
Have any of you ever hit anything going 5 mph? I don’t care if it’s just a tree limb. You notice.
I am a strong crusader for better police oversight and laws so abuse is caught and corrected. As for individual cops, they are neither angels nor demons. They are human, with the same capacity for acts of generosity or cowardice as any of us. Remember that when declaring law enforcement to be heroes or murderers.
The activists are calling for the CHP to reveal the name of the officer who hit Isaac and did not stop to provide aid. They are calling for the officer’s immediate termination as well as the officers who refused to take a report from the community.
